A stage musical version of Prince’s film Purple Rain is in the works.

The adaptation will use Prince songs with a book by Pulitzer-Prize finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, whose play Appropriate is currently on Broadway. The book is based on the original Purple Rain screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn.

The production will be direct by Lileana Blain-Cruz, who recently helmed Skin of Our Teeth on Broadway.

There's no other details yet on when the production will debut, but the producers are aiming to take it to Broadway.

Purple Rain -- the album and movie -- mark their 40th anniversaries this year.
