1963 - Neil Young, 17, plays his first show, performing at a country club in Winnipeg with his band, The Squires. They had a local hit with "The Sultan."
1970 - The Jackson 5 went to No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "I Want You Back". The song was originally written for Gladys Knight & the Pips and was the first of four No. 1's for the group.
1979 - With Bo Diddley as their opening act, The Clash began their first U.S. tour. The Clash where huge fans of Bo Diddley. For his part, Diddley had no misgivings about facing a skeptical audience. “You cannot say what people are gonna like or not gonna like,” he explained later to the biographer George White. “You have to stick it out there and find out! If they taste it, and they like the way it tastes, you can bet they’ll eat some of it!”
1981 - Blondie went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'The Tide Is High.' It's is a cover song, originally recorded by a Jamaican vocal group called The Paragons in 1967.
