ON THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY: 2.14.22

1967- Aretha Franklin recorded "Respect" at New York's Atlantic Studios. The song was written and originally released by Otis Redding in 1965, but even he admits that it's truly Aretha's song. One of the most celebrated songs of the R&B era, Aretha's version is a feminist declaration from a strong woman who demands respect and "her propers" when she gets home.

1970 - The Who appeared at Leeds University, England. The show was recorded for the bands forthcoming 'Live At Leeds' album. Since its initial reception, Live at Leeds has been cited by several music critics as the best live rock recording of all time.

Here, the Who sound vicious -- as heavy as Led Zeppelin but twice as volatile -- as they careen through early classics with the confidence of a band that had finally achieved acclaim but had yet to become preoccupied with making art. In that regard, this recording -- in its many different forms -- may have been perfectly timed in terms of capturing the band at a pivotal moment in its history.

1972 - John Lennon and Yoko Ono began a week-long stint as co-hosts on the midday variety TV show "The Mike Douglas Show". It was a week filled with unusual guests, including Ralph Nader, Jerry Rubin and Surgeon General Dr. Jesse Steinfeld. Douglas called it "probably the most memorable week I did in all my 20-something years on air."

The musical highlight of the week, however, was an appearance by one of Lennon's biggest heroes, Chuck Berry. Berry and Lennon even performed Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" and "Memphis, Tennessee".

1986 - Frank Zappa appeared on an episode of the television series Miami Vice. Zappa portrayed a crime boss named "Mr. Frankie".

1992 - The film "Wayne's World," which featured appearances from Meat Loaf and Alice Cooper, was released in the US.

"Wayne's World" was originally a recurring sketch from the NBC television series Saturday Night Live. The sketch centered on a local public-access television program in Aurora, Illinois, hosted by Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers), an enthusiastic and sardonic long-haired metalhead, and his timid and sometimes high-strung, yet equally metal-loving sidekick and best friend, Garth Algar (Dana Carvey). Wayne lives with his parents and broadcasts his show "live" from the basement of their house every Friday evening at 10:30.

The use of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the film propelled the song to No. 2 on the U.S. singles charts nearly 20 years after its first release. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

2016 - Adele was at No.1 on the US album chart with her third studio album 25. The album was a massive commercial success, debuting at No.1 in more than 25 markets and broke first-week sales records in multiple countries,
