ON THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY: 11.22

1957 - Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel appeared as Tom and Jerry on American Bandstand. Played their minor hit "Hey Little Schoolgirl." Both were just 16 years old.

1968 - The Beatles released The Beatles (AKA, The White Album). Each song on the sprawling double album is an entity to itself, as the band touches on anything and everything it can. This makes for a frustratingly scattershot record or a singularly gripping musical experience, depending on your view. There's a Beach Boys send up, ska, British blooze, mock country, and canned soul. None of it sounds like it was meant to share album space together, but somehow The Beatles creates its own style and sound through its mess. (Photo by Krafft Angerer/Getty Images)

1989 - In Back to the Future Part II, Marty McFly spies on his future self, who is foolishly led into a shady business deal by his co-worker Douglas J. Needles, played by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

1994 - Pearl Jam released their third studio album Vitalogy, which was first released on vinyl and became the first vinyl album to appear on the U.S. chart, since the domination of the compact disc format.

Vitalogy stands as Pearl Jam's most original and uncompromising album. While it isn't a concept album, death and despair shroud it. But Pearl Jam are at their best when they're fighting, whether it's Ticketmaster, fame, or their own personal demons.

1997 - Michael Hutchence of INXS died in Sydney. The INXS frontman was struggling with depression, made worse by constant media scrutiny over his relationship with British TV host Paula Yates and her contentious custody battle with ex-husband Bob Geldof (The Boomtown Rats). He was just 37, the victim of an apparent hanging.
