1956 - Carl Perkins was almost fatally injured in an automobile accident near Wilmington, Delaware, while on his way to New York City to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. Perkins had to spend several months in the hospital. By the time he was well enough to resume his career, Elvis Presley had covered his hit "Blue Suede Shoes," and Perkins’ trajectory never really rebounded.

1965 - Bob Dylan releases his fifth studio album, Bringing It All Back Home. With Another Side of Bob Dylan, Dylan had begun pushing past folk, and with Bringing It All Back Home, he exploded the boundaries, producing an album of boundless imagination and skill.

And it's not just that he went electric, it's that he's exploding with imagination throughout the record. This is the point where Dylan eclipses any conventional sense of folk and rewrites the rules of rock, making it safe for personal expression and poetry, not only making words mean as much as the music, but making the music an extension of the words. 1974 - The Eagles released their third studio album On the Border. The sessions began in England with producer Glynn Johns, who wanted to emphasize their country roots, but the band wanted to go in a more hard rock direction and left for L.A.

They got what they wanted with "Already Gone" and "James Dean". but their was bluegrass, country rock and a cover of Tom Waits' Ol' 55. An album that looked back to their earlier work and anticipated their later work.

Do you still have the original vinyl? A hidden message carved into the run out groove of some vinyl LPs reads: "He who hesitates is lunch".

1978 - The Beatles' parody 'The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash' aired on NBC with Eric Idle, Neil Innes, etc. Coming out a full four years before This Is Spinal Tap, it was considered the first rock mockumentary.

All You Need Is Cash is a series of skits and gags that illustrate the fictional Rutles story, closely following the chronology of the Beatles' career. The film also features cameos from several SNL cast members including Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Al Franken, and Tom Davis; Ronnie Wood as a Hells Angel; Mick Jagger, and Paul Simon. It's worth a watch.

1980 -Pink Floyd tops the Hot 100 with "Another Brick In The Wall (part II)," which stays a total of four weeks. It's a rare hit single for the band, whose only other Top 40 appearance is "Money," which hit #13 in 1973.

Producer Bob Ezrin has transformed the band's original minute-and-a-half demo recording into a multi-tracked masterpiece, by physically copy and pasting the tape to increase the length of the song. His inspired decision to add a choir of London school children to pad out the second verse (following his use of a similar format on Alice Cooper's hit "School's Out") leads to the band's biggest ever commercial single success.

2013 - Vance Joy releases his debut EP, God Loves You When You're Dancing. Included "Riptide". Vance plays a KBCO show at Red Rocks Aug. 27th.

Keith Relf, lead singer of The Yardbirds, was born today in 1943. Although the Yardbirds will forever be associated first and foremost with their extraordinary roster of guitarists during their career (Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page), singer Keith Relf was an integral ingredient of the band's sound. Keith Relf's vocal style could be detected in numerous subsequent hard rock/blues-rock singers, including Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and AC/DC's Bon Scott, among others.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is 75. A prime torchbearer of the rock musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber is the most successful Broadway and West End composer of his generation. His work typically combines dramatic, emotional plots with anthemic music that incorporates both classical and rock elements.
