'Moonlight' Writer Is Heading To Broadway With Gay Play

Tarell Alvin McCraney, one of the co-writers and executive producer of Moonlight, is scheduled to make his Broadway debut later this year in a play called Choir Boy, according to a new report by Playbill.

Directed by Trip Cullman, the Broadway play is a coming-of-age drama that centers on a character named Pharus, who is the leader of a young choir and endures homophobic taunting from his classmates over his effeminate behavior. It's not just his classmates either as his headmaster also scorns the student. McCraney's play will be part of Manhattan Theatre Club's 2018–19 season and was originally commissioned by the club and opened off-Broadway back in 2013. Additional plays by Richard Bean and Jaclyn Backhaus will also premiere during the season.

Choir Boy begins Broadway performances on December 27 and opens to the public on January 22, 2019.
