The Very First ever Smiths recording has surfaced!!!!!

The first recording that Morrissey and Johnny Marr made as The Smiths has hit YouTube.

The track is a cover of The Cookies’ “I Want a Boy for My Birthday” recorded in August 1982 in an attic. They gave it to bassist Dale Hibbert to learn for the group's first demo sessions later that month. Hibbert, a recording engineer who was replaced by Andy Rourke just a few months later, is the one who posted the track on YouTube.

The Smiths would go on to perform the song just twice in concert, including at their live debut on October 4th, 1982. They never did a proper studio recording.
