Nathaniel Rateliff Releases Willie Nelson Duet

Birthday wishes for Willie Nelson have poured in all day on Thursday, but few as personal as Nathaniel Rateliff‘s. In honor of the Red Headed Stranger’s 88th birthday, the fellow singer-songwriter has released “It’s Not Supposed To Be That Way”, a duet recorded with Willie.

Shotgun Willie originally released “It’s Not Supposed To Be That Way” in 1974 as a duet with fellow Outlaw Country pioneer Waylon Jennings. The new recording is featured on the latest installment of Rateliff’s Marigold Singles series with the B-side of the 7″ vinyl exclusive hosting the previously-released single “Willie’s Birthday Song“. All proceeds from this latest Marigold Singles will benefit Nelson’s Farm Aid as well as Strong Hearts Native Helpline, which provides resources in Native American communities for victims of domestic abuse.

“I really appreciated Nathaniel doing this song out of my catalog and it was a pleasure to sing with him,” Nelson said in a press release. “Nathaniel and his band have been great friends and supporters of Farm Aid ever since we got to know each other six years ago.”
