I didn't know Dr. Lonnie Smith all that well personally, but I did meet him on numerous occasions. There were questions he would not answer: What was he a "Dr." of? Why did he wear that turban? He was one of the most brilliant Hammond B-3 organists, ever. He made a ton of terrific jazz albums for the Blue Note label, reaching back to the '60s.
