Pete Rose, who had 4,256 hits -- the most in MLB history, died at 83

MLB legend Pete Rose, known as Charlie Hustle for the way he played the game, died Monday night at the age of 83. His family has not given a cause for his death.

The all-time hits leader led a historic baseball career for 24 seasons before being banned for life from the sport in 1989, after working as the manager for the Reds. Rose's career ended when he was caught betting on games -- including some of his own team's. He recently said that gambling on the games was his only regret.

  • Rose played for the Cincinnati Reds for 19 combined seasons. He also played five seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and one with the Montreal Expos.
  • He won a pair of World Series titles in 1975 and 1976 while playing for Cincinnati. It was the Reds' first championship in 35 years.
  • He finished his career with 4,256 hits -- the most in MLB history. Ty Cobb is the only other player to surpass the 4,000-hits mark.
  • Rose also holds MLB records for games played (3,562), plate appearances (15,890) and at bats (14,053).
  • He spent seven seasons as the manager of the Reds before his career ended with the gambling scandal.
  • He pleaded guilty to tax evasion for failing to report over $200,000 in income to the IRS.
  • The lifetime ban against Rose has kept him out of the Hall of Fame, though the ban has been debated constantly over the last several decades.
  • Rose was featured on a reality show that lasted for one season. Pete Rose: Hits and Mrs. followed his life post-ban and his engagement to former Playboy model Kiana Kim.
  • As recently as a few weeks ago, Rose was doing interviews in which he made what turned out to be his final case for Major League Baseball to allow him to enter the Hall of Fame. still
