Paul McCartney has been minted as England's Royal Mint introduces the official Paul McCartney coin.
It features his psychedelic "Magic Piano" as well as several references to his career, including piano notes personally chosen by him, a Hofner Violin bass guitar and the Wings logo.
"This feels like a huge honor," says Paul. "It’s not anything I would have ever expected to happen when I was a kid."
Paul approved the design, which marks the first time he's appeared on an official UK coin.
And, to show their gratitude, The Royal Mint, inspired by Paul’s use of pennies as guitar picks in the early days, also created a special edition plectrum shaped version of the coin for him. The one-off plectrum has been produced using sustainable gold, recovered from e-waste at The Royal Mint’s factory in South Wales.
Early next year, The Royal Mint will auction a signed, gold edition of Paul’s coin, which took over 250 hours to make, including three days of hand polishing. It was signed this week by Paul during his 2024 Got Back tour in Paris and will be auctioned alongside four silver five kilo editions.
The coins start at just under $20 and are available at RoyalMint.com.
Other artists recognized by The Royal Mint include Queen, The Who, David Bowie, Elton John, The Rolling Stones and The Police.
McCartney's Got Back tour heads to Madrid, Spain for two shows on Monday and Tuesday.
