Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron announced he's leaving the band.

In a statement on their social media Cameron wrote, "After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam. Much love and respect to JeffEdMike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, one filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter. I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It's been an incredible journey. More to follow. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Peace and love."

The band issued their own statement that said, "From being one of our first musical heroes in the bands Skinyard and the mighty Soundgarden, to playing on our first demos in 1990, Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer. He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt."

The 62-year-old Cameron, who will be joining the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame a second time as a member of Soundgarden in November, helped solidify the band's lineup in 1998. He joined about a year after Soundgarden had broken up, replacing Jack Irons.

Up until that time the drum position had been Spinal Tap-like, with Dave Krusen from 1990 to 1991, Matt Chamberlain in 1991, Dave Abbruzzese from 1991 to 1994 and Irons from 1994 to 1998.

Pearl Jam fans had been wondering about the status of the band on message boards and Reddit the past two months. That's because during their last two shows of the year, in Pittsburgh May 16th and 18th, Eddie Vedder repeatedly told fans that he didn't know when the band would see them again.
