Lucy Dacus opened up to fans about being adopted in a new Instagram post.
She shared a photo of her adoptive mother and wrote, "My mom retired from teaching elementary school music this week. I took this photo of her in her classroom before she had to pack everything up. She’s been a teacher for 40 years. The amount of people that have come up to me while walking around Richmond to say, 'Miss Dacus was my music teacher!' with a big smile on their face is in the hundreds.
"I have no clue what my relationship to music would be without her. She always harmonizes to what’s on the radio, so I grew up doing the same, one of the many things I learned from her before I knew that’s what was happening, like language and facial expressions. Basically I’m proud of her and I like this photo of her, so I wanted to share."
She shared a different photo of her birth month and wrote, "It was also my birthmother’s birthday [last week]. I took this photo last year on a hike. Becoming friends in recent years has been one of the most fascinating and meaningful experiences of my life. It’s almost eery finding new similarities, things you would never believe could be transferable. Maybe this is a feeling many of you are born into and can’t be surprised by, but I keep being surprised. I respect the way she navigates the world and am grateful for the path she put me on."
Dacus added, "You wouldn’t believe the amount of grown adults that hear about this and react like I’m little orphan Annie, like it’s automatically a sad story. But being adopted is the original miracle of my life. I’m so grateful to all my parents for making the choices they did. I was raised to believe all family is chosen. I wish every kid, adopted or not, could feel sought the way I did."
