The "best rock band" of all time didn't buy a stairway to heaven, but they did top the list of the best rock bands in music history.

The legendary group, composed of lead singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham, took over the 1970s and gifted the world a slew of iconic rock masterpieces that listeners of all ages still enjoy to this day.

According to a list compiled by The Top Tens, the best rock band of all time is Led Zeppelin. The "All My Love" legends were formed in London in 1968 and first called themselves the New Yardbirds.

Responsible for hits including "Stairway to Heaven," "Immigrant Song," "Ramble On," "Black Dog," and "Good Times Bad Times," to name only a few timeless tracks, Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 after the death of their drummer. Bonham was so central to the group's sound that they announced their split less than a day after his passing, per Far Out Magazine.

"When we lost John, we agreed unanimously that that was that," Plant shared shortly after the death of his friend. Years later, Page agreed that simply hiring another drummer would never have worked.

Other groundbreaking groups that made the list include The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen, and Metallica to round out the top five.

"Page states it was Keith Moon of The Who that claimed the band could only go down, like a lead balloon -- thus prompting the iconic name of Led Zeppelin. The band's heavy, guitar-driven sound, rooted in blues and psychedelia on their early albums, has earned them recognition as one of the progenitors of heavy metal."
