A few years ago I saw a very moving documentary called "Alive Inside" at the Boulder International Film Festival. The film is about the Music and Memory program which helps people with Alzheimer's and dementia by providing them with Ipods that have personalized music playlists. The film showed how songs tapped into their memory, and in many cases the responses were joyous. There weren't a lot of dry eyes in the theater when that movie ended, and not long after I saw it, my mom was diagnosed with dementia. I've seen firsthand the power music has had on her. Today I was happy to see that Elvis Costello, whose grandmother had Alzheimer's, is using his voice to spread the word about Music and Memory.
