ON THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY: 6.2

1978 - Bruce Springsteen releases Darkness On The Edge Of Town. On Born to Run, Springsteen had first begun to view his colorful cast of characters as "losers." On Darkness, he began to see them as the working class. They had little and were in danger of losing even that. Their only hope for redemption lay in working harder. Darkness was given a full-bodied sound, but despite the rock & roll fervor, Darkness was no easy listen, and it served notice that Springsteen was already willing to risk his popularity for his principles.

2006 - Muscle Shoals Sound Studios is added to the National Historic Register.

In recognition of its place in music history, the Muscle Shoals Sound Studios building in Sheffield, Alabama, is named to the National Historic Register. The small stone building at 3614 Jackson Highway attracted an array of legendary musicians after the studio's founding in 1969, including The Staple Singers, Paul Simon, Bob Seger, and The Rolling Stones.

2008 - Bo Diddley, (Ellas Otha Bates) died, aged 79. The legendary singer and performer, was known for his homemade square guitar and his 'shave and a haircut, two bits' rhythm, which influenced artists from Buddy Holly to Bruce Springsteen The Rolling Stones and U2.

2022 - Berklee College of Music honored Ringos Starr with a special Honorary Degree. In his acceptance speech the legendary drummer summed up his musical philosophy by saying, "You know, I just hit them. That's all I do. I just hit the buggers. And it seems to be, I hit them in the right place."

Birthdays:

Charlie Watts was born on this day in 1941. Charlie Watts was world famous as the drummer with the Rolling Stones, a position he held for nearly 60 years, and the subtle yet strong swing of his backbeat and his deceptively simple grooves would become one of the band's audible trademarks. When not busy with the Stones, Watts also enjoyed a celebrated sideline playing jazz, his first love, with a variety of British combos, both large and small.

Interesting facts: Charlie collected rare and vintage cars despite not having a drivers license. He also ran an Arabian Horse stud farm. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)
