1969 - At a press conference in London, Mick Taylor is introduced as the new guitarist of The Rolling Stones, replacing founding member Brian Jones.
1983 - Stevie Ray Vaughan released his debut, Texas Flood. It's hard to overestimate the impact Stevie Ray Vaughan's debut, Texas Flood, had upon its release in 1983. At that point, blues was no longer hip, the way it was in the '60s. Texas Flood changed all that.(Photo by Cindy Ord/Getty Images)
Recorded in 2 days, with no overdubs, it's paced like a club show. .kicking off with Vaughan's two best self-penned songs, "Love Struck Baby" and "Pride and Joy," then settling into a pair of covers, the slow-burning title track and an exciting reading of Howlin' Wolf's "Tell Me," before building to the climax of "Dirty Pool" and "I'm Crying." Vaughan caps the entire thing with "Lenny," a lyrical, jazzy tribute to his wife.
1995 - Alanis Morissette released Jagged Little Pill. Plays like an emotional purging, prompted by a bitter relationship. She never disguises her outright rage and disgust, whether it's the vengeful wrath of "You Oughta Know" or asking him "you scan the credits for your name and wonder why it's not there." This is such insider information that it's hard to believe that millions of listeners not just bought it, but embraced it, turning Alanis Morisette into a mid-'90s phenomenon.
Birthdays:
David Gray is 55. Gray had already built a respectable, if commercially overlooked career as a folk-rock artist in the mid-'90s before his innovative fourth album, White Ladder, brought his mix of acoustic instruments and electronic samples into the mainstream.
It was chance meeting in front of Albums On the Hill in Boulder that David met Dave Matthews. David was performing in front of the store in front of a handful of people during a record and radio convention. Matthew's would release White Ladder in the states on his own label.
Rivers Cuomo is 53. Intrigued by both the sounds of heavy metal (Kiss, Van Halen) and hook-heavy punk-pop (the Pixies), Cuomo moved to Los Angeles from Connecticut, in 1989 alongside his bandmates in the progressive metal outfit Avant Garde. The group disbanded one year later, however, and Cuomo dabbled in several other projects before forming Weezer in 1992.
R.I.P.
