ON THIS DAY IN MUSIC HISTORY: 12.13

1969 - Bob Dylan was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, on sale for $.35.

1975 - David Bowie's "Golden Years" was released. The song was the main single from Bowie's Station To Station album. Bowie has said he was looking to emulate something of the feeling of the song "On Broadway", and that he offered it to Elvis Presley to perform, but that Presley declined it. 1996 - Jerry Maguire, directed by Cameron Crowe, opened. The film featured cameos from Glenn Frey of the Eagles (as Arizona Cardinals general manager Dennis Wilburn and Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains. He was the the stoned photocopy guy, the "Jesus of CopyMat".

1999 - BMI publishes their list of the most-played songs on American radio and TV in the 20th century. The Top 5:

"You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'"- Righteous Brothers

Birthdays:

Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, guitarist for Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers is 75. He's also done session and tour work for countless other artists. Then...

Baxter fell into his second profession almost by accident. In the mid-1980s, his interest in music recording technology led him to wonder about hardware and software originally developed for military use, specifically data compression algorithms and large-capacity storage devices.

This lead to consulting contracts with the Pentagon as well as defense-oriented manufacturers.

Baxter has said. "My big thing is to look at existing technologies and try to see other ways they can be used, which happens in music all the time and happens to be what terrorists are incredibly good at."

Tom Verlaine, singer-songwriter and guitarist for Television, was born on this day in 1949. The band was an early fixture of CBGB and the 1970s New York rock scene. Their debut album Marquee Moon is often considered one of the defining releases of the post-punk era. Verlaine was in discussion with Jeff Buckley to produce his second album before Buckley's death by drowning in 1997.

Tom DeLonge of Blink-182 is 48. Their song "All The Small Things", has become a staple during the third period of Colorado Avalanche game's at Ball Arena, playing during a TV timeout or other point where there is a stop in the action.

However, the singing doesn't stop during the breaks either. While the music might turn off once play resumes, the Avs fans take it upon themselves to finish out the chorus.

Evanescence lead singer Amy Lee is 42. Her future bandmate Ben Moody hears her playing a Meat Loaf tune on the piano while the two attend a youth camp in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1994. The following year, Evanescence is born.

Taylor Swift is 34. I'm told she has a knack for turning heartache into hit singles. Time's 2023 Person Of The Year

R.I.P.:

2017 - Pat DiNizio, singer and main songwriter of the Smithereens, passes away at the age of 62.

DiNizio stood out not only with his beatnik goatee, but also because his catchy hooks with the band..

The Smithereens wound up with two Top 40 hits during the late '80s and early '90s -- "A Girl Like You" was a powerhouse on modern and mainstream rock, "Too Much Passion" showed off their pop side.
