It took 58 years, but Bob Dylan finally has his first number-one song.
"Murder Most Foul," his 17-minute opus about the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, debuted at the top of Billboard'sRock Digital Song Sales chart.
Released on March 27th, it streamed 1.8 million times and sold 10,000 downloads in its first week, ending April 2nd, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.
The closest Dylan came to a number-one song was with four number-two songs:
- "Like a Rolling Stone" 1965 -Hot 100
- "Rainy Day Women #12 and 35" 1966 -Hot 100
- "Things Have Changed" 2000 -Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart
- "Handle With Care," "End of the Line" & "She's My Baby" (w/Traveling Wilburys) late '80s/early '90s -Mainstream Rock Songs airplay chart
He did hit number-one as a songwriter when Peter, Paul & Mary's cover of "Blowin' in the Wind" topped theAdult Contemporary airplay chart in August 1963, and again in June 1965 with The Byrds' version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" on the Hot 100.
