U2's Bono and The Edge and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam were among the performers at the funeral of Glen Hansard today (Tuesday) in Dublin, Ireland.
The Oscar-winning singer-songwriter and member of The Frames and The Swell Season died last Wednesday in a motorcycle crash in Dublin at the age of 56.
Eddie Vedder and Hansard's partner in The Swell Season, Markéta Irglová, sang Hansard's "The Song of Good Hope" during the service.
Bono, who'd taken part in many Christmas Eve busking events with Hansard, was one of the speakers. He said that Hansard had the ability to make everyone feel like his “best friend.”
“How do you do that? People on the green outside, best friends. People tuning in, best friends. Even people who haven’t met him, best friends. Everyone who met him, they just remember the day they met him.”
He also played a voicemail message from Patti Smith that he called "a lullaby for Glen’s family and friends.”
Bono then recited a poem for Hansard that reworked and incorporated lyrics from U2’s “Beautiful Day,” and was joined by The Edge when the mourners started singing the chorus to the song.
Other notable mourners at the service included Hozier, Jake Clemens and actors Steve Coogan and Chris O’Dowd.
The service ended with many of the musicians and people in attendance leaving the church while singing Bob Dylan's "Forever Young."
